FAIRFAX, Va. – West Virginia University’s track and field team qualified four for the BIG EAST Championship on the second week of competition at the George Mason Open on Saturday, Mar. 31.
“I am really pleased with this weekend’s results,” says coach Jeff Huntoon. “The girls competed very well and we are progressing nicely as the season gets under way.”
Leading the Mountaineers was senior Abbie Stechschulte, who qualified for BIG EAST in both the 100 meter hurdles (14.05) and the javelin (35.05 meters). The Columbus Grove, Ohio, native’s time in the hurdles is a lifetime best and qualifies her for the ECAC Championship as well. Stechschulte also took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters.
Senior Nancy Regalbuto captured first in the high jump with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 1.65 meters. This is the first victory of the season for the Hedgesville, W.Va., native, making only her second appearance since sitting out with a redshirt during the 2006 outdoor season.
Also qualifying for the conference championship this weekend were sophomore Julie Tawney in the high jump (1.65 meters) and junior Maggie Smith in the pole vault (3.40 meters).
Sophomore Brittany Hohn enjoyed a nice day at the Open, taking eighth in the 100 meter dash (12.56) and ninth in the 200 meter dash (25.66).
In the 400 meter dash, Halimah Bashir took 12th with a time of 57.88, while in the 800 meter run, junior Alison Spiker finished 11th, clocking in at 2:18.87.
Sophomore Karly Hamric had a career day in the 1500 meter run, taking sixth with a personal best time of 4:38.66.
In the field events, freshman Natasha Redman finished fifth in the high jump, leaping 1.55 meters, while Lashawna Black secured ninth in the shot put with a throw of 11.46 meters.
Fourteen Mountaineers will now travel to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays on April 4. The meet is set to conclude on April 7.
