MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After two weeks of training, West Virginia University’s outdoor track and field team is ready to return to competition, traveling to the George Mason Open on Saturday, Mar. 31, in Fairfax, Va.
“We had two fantastic weeks of training,” says coach Jeff Huntoon. “It was great to get the team outside and running with the wind in their faces. The staff has a really good feeling about this season, and we are all anxious to get out there and compete.”
WVU is already off to a great start this season, having qualified three student-athletes for the BIG EAST Championship at the 49er Classic on Mar. 17.
Senior Jessica Czaikowski leads the Mountaineers with two top performances. The Tottenham, Ontario, native is first in the conference in the 100 meter dash (11.61) and second in the 100 meter hurdles (13.52). Both times qualify Czaikowski for BIG EAST and NCAA Regionals.
Junior Nicole Lemal also performed exceptionally at the Classic, qualifying for BIG EAST in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:52.64.
Freshman Marie Louise Asselin is the final qualifying Mountaineer, holding the league’s second best time in the 1500 meter run (4:25.52). Asselin’s time also qualifies her for the NCAA Regionals.
WVU will next travel to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays on April 4-7.
