Baseball: West Virginia to Host Canisius

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will host Canisius for two seven-inning games on Tuesday, March 27, at Hawley Field. First pitch for game one is schedule for 1 p.m.
West Virginia (13-5, 3-0) enters Tuesday’s match up after a series sweep of Seton Hall to open BIG EAST play March 24-25. The Mountaineers took game one by a score of 4-3 in a 13-inning thriller. Sophomore Adam White singled up the middle to score Austin Markel and give WVU the win. West Virginia won game two of the series 12-5. Senior Jason Pape scored off a wild pitch from Pirate right-hander Dan McDonald in the bottom of the ninth inning to take game three, 4-3, and complete the sweep.
White continues to be a threat at the plate, being the only Mountaineer to boast a batting average above .400 (.410). Senior Justin Jenkins has batted in a team-high 21 RBIs. Jenkins and junior Tyler Kuhn have homered a team-best four times each. Junior left-hander Kenny Durst (3-1) is boasting a 1.70 ERA and has struck out 27 batters in 37.0 innings of work.
Canisius (4-17) enters after two straight losses to Manhattan on Sunday, March 25. The Golden Griffins were shutout 5-0 in game one of the doubleheader and fell 7-3 in game two. Game three of the series will be played Monday, March 26.
Kevin Reimer is batting .400 for Canisius this season. The sophomore catcher has hit six doubles and three home runs while batting in 16 RBIs. Freshman left-hander Mike Goemans (1-0) is sporting a 5.40 ERA with eight strikeouts in 6 appearances on the mound.
Tuesday’s doubleheader marks the first meeting between the Mountaineers and the Golden Griffins.
