CONWAY, S.C. – The WVU baseball team triumped over Marist in a miraculous bottom of the ninth comeback Friday evening at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C. The Mountaineers took the game by a score of 6-5.
Marist (0-4) put the pressure on early with a run in the top of the first. Senior Pat Feeney smacked a single up the middle to score senior Travis Musolf who reached on a walk off junior lefthander Matt Yurish. The Red Foxes then tacked on another run in the top of the fourth when redshirt senior Adam Pernasilici scored off sophomore Kyle Meyer’s drive to center field.
West Virginia (4-2) tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. Jordon Yost crossed home after a single from sophomore Justin Parks. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Vince Belnome had advanced Yost to third. Sophomore Adam White later drove a single through the right side to score Brent Lockhart.
The Red Foxes tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh. Yost homered in the bottom of the eighth to narrow the gap.
Down by two in the bottom of the ninth, senior Justin Jenkins slammed a triple to left center to score Tyler Kuhn and White who had both reached on singles. An error by shortstop Richar Curylo would score Jenkins to give West Virginia the 6-5 win.
Redshirt freshman Billy Gross was credited with the win as he struck out five batters and allowed two hits in 2.2 innings on the mound.
Red Fox reliever Rober Ryan recorded the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Lockhart went 3-3 to lead West Virginia while Yost and White were 3-5.
"I'm very proud of our team," said WVU coach Greg Van Zant. "We never gave up and we played all 27 outs.
"I was extremely impressed with Marist. Erik Supplee pitched a great game. We were fortunate to win the game."
The Mountaineers will next take on Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, in the team’s second game at the Coastal Carolina Tournament.
