MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Josh Whitlock has been named the BIG EAST pitcher of the week after his performance against Hartford on March 12.
Whitlock, a 6-1, 190-pound redshirt sophomore from Given, W.Va., led WVU to an 11-1 victory on Monday, March 12, to complete a four-game sweep of Hartford at Hawley Field.
Whitlock held the Hawks hitless for the first 6.2 innings of the game. The right-hander allowed just one hit had 10 strikeouts while walking just three in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season for the Mountaineers. It was just his second career start in a Mountaineer uniform.
Logan Johnson, Louisville’s senior second baseman, was named the BIG EAST player of the week.
West Virginia will host St. Bonaventure in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday’s start has been moved up to 4 p.m., while Wednesday’s game is at 3 p.m., at Hawley Field.
West Virginia (9-4) enters this weekend’s competition after a 14-12 loss to Duquesne on Tuesday, March 13. Adam White was 3-for-5 while catcher Justin Parks went 2-for-3. Senior Justin Jenkins knocked out his second homerun of the season in the third inning.
White is batting .411 to lead the Mountaineers this season. Junior Tyler Kuhn has a team-high 18 RBI. Left-hander Kenny Durst (2-1) has a team-best 1.75 ERA. Fellow lefty Matt Yurish has struck out 23 batters in 19.1 innings on the mound.
St. Bonaventure (4-8) is coming off a 14-6 win over New Jersey Tech on Sunday, March 11. Junior Randy Moley and sophomore Tristan Mulcahy both had four RBI apiece. Left-hander Eddie Williams recorded the win and improved to 2-1 on the season. Williams allowed six runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.
On the season, Moley leads the Bonnies with a .431 batting average and 22 hits. Senior Brian Pellegrini has registered 15 RBI. Right-hander Jim Britton is sporting a 6.75 ERA with a 1-1 record. Britton has appeared in four games. Williams has struck out a team-high 20 batters thus far.
The Mountaineers lead the all-time series with the Bonnies 43-17.
