Women's Tennis: WVU Pounds Pitt, 4-3

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s tennis team secured its third BIG EAST win of the season, defeating the Pitt Panthers, 4-3, on Friday, Mar. 16, at the Ridgeview Racquet and Fitness Club.
“While it was good to get a BIG EAST win, I was disappointed with the team’s intensity and the overall effort,” says first year coach Marc Walters. “After our strong doubles showing, we struggled in singles and had to really pull for the win. Pitt played well from start to finish, and I feel fortunate to get the win.”
The Mountaineers (8-6, 3-1) started the day strong, sweeping the doubles matches for the team point. The win was sealed when juniors Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival teamed up to defeat the #13 team of Kristy Borza and Leah Friedman, 8-6, in the No. 1 match.
In singles action, junior Monica Lyskawa continued her steady streak of winning, defeating Carlie Smith in the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-1.
Also getting wins for the Mountaineers were freshman Alexandra Kaluza, who defeated Annie Davies in the No. 5 match, 7-5, 6-2, and Percival, who beat Friedman in the No. 2 match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
“Both Stacey and Alex played with extreme confidence today,” says Walters.
WVU was to host BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Sunday, Mar. 18, but due to inclement weather, the match has been postponed indefinitely. The Mountaineers will next compete against Southern Mississippi in the Eagles Classis in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Friday, March 23. The time is still to be determined.
