Baseball: WVU Heads to Coastal Carolina Tourney

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team heads south this weekend to take on Marist, Rhode Island and No. 22 Coastal Carolina at the Coast Carolina Tournament held March 2-4, at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
The Mountaineers will open tournament play with a Noon contest against the Red Foxes on Friday, March 2. WVU will then take on the Rams of Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. West Virginia finishes the weekend with the Chanticleers on Sunday, March 4. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
WVU (3-2) enters this weekend after a 1-1 split in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament Feb. 23-25. After falling 5-1, to N.C. State on Friday, Feb. 23, the Mountaineers rebounded by defeating UNC Wilmington 7-6, on Sunday, Feb. 25. Starting right-handed pitcher Levi Maxwell allowed only five hits while striking out six batters in seven innings of work. First baseman Mike Schmidt and shortstop Tyler Kuhn batted in two runs a piece to lead WVU offensively.
Justin Jenkins is batting .400 with two doubles, one home run and six RBI this season, while centerfielder Adam White is sporting a .381 average with a pair of steals.
Marist (0-3) opened its season last weekend against UNC Greensboro and was swept in a three-game series with the Spartans. Outfielder Max Most leads the Red Foxes with a .500 BA and three RBI. Right-handed pitcher Erik Supplee has a 0-1 record after three games and a 1.80 ERA.
Rhode Island is 1-3 after opening its season at Florida International. Senior infielder Ryan Cunningham heads up the Rhode Island offense with a .526 BA, 10 hits and nine RBI. Left-handed pitcher Adam Perkins recorded the Ram’s only win, as he struck out seven batters and allowed only three runs on five hits.
Coastal Carolina (9-2) dropped its first road game of the season on Wednesday 4-3, to North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Chanticleers opened the season on an eight-game win streak before two of their last three. Leftfielder David Sappelt leads CCU with a .440 average and seven RBI, while pitcher Andy DeLaGarza is 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA.
