Swimming: Mountaineers Conclude Georgia Invite

FINAL RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished in a combined fifth place today, after three days of competition at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga.
In the last day of competition, the women’s team had six top ten finishes giving them 413 points, enough for fourth place. The men’s team also had a good showing today with six top ten finishers, putting them in fifth place with 305 points.
Sophomore Kayla Andrews led the women’s team with a first place in the 100 free with a time of 49.71, while also contributing on the fourth place women’s 400 free relay team (3:24.76), along with teammates Kitti Veisz, Stephanie Shupe and Shaunna Purtell.
Junior Lindsey Largo had an outstanding performance in the 1650 free event finishing in eighth place with a time of 16:49.25, while sophomore Morgan Callaway came in seventh in the 200 back (2:01.87). Also having stand-out individual performances for the women was Veisz, Isabel Perez and Meghan Fiene who finished the 200 breast in fifth, ninth and 11th with times of 2:17.90, 2:20.86, and 2:25.06.
On the men’s side sophomore Justin Galbreath started off the day with an 11th place finish in the men’s 1650 with a time of 15:45.28. Sophomore Tim Field also had an outstanding performance finishing in in sixth place in the 200 back in 1:49.87, while junior Payton Brooks and sophomore Zoltan Povazsay finished the 100 free in eighth (46.63) and ninth (45.75).
Junior Michael Walker led the way for the Mountaineers in the 200 back with a strong third place finish (2:03.07) behind Northwestern and Georgia, with Felipe Cunha following in eighth place with a time of 2:07.18.
Capping off the day was the men’s 400 relay team, made up of Brooks, Povazsay, Nathan Farmer and Nick Delic, who finished in seventh place with a time of 3:05.47.
In diving, sophomore Cameron Whitelam came in third place with 233.95.
The Mountaineers will return to action at home on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the WVU Natatorium against BIG EAST rivals Pitt. Meet time is set for 11 a.m.
