GAME NOTES
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 13-rated West Virginia has a tough assignment Monday night facing 6-2 Oakland in a 7 p.m. game at Athletics Center O’Rena. West Virginia won last year’s game 70-61 in Morgantown behind 17 points from Sparkle Davis and 15 from Chakhia Cole.
Junior guard Jessica Pike scored a game-high 19 points for the Golden Grizzlies.
West Virginia (9-1) is coming off a 93-26 victory over Presbyterian at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. The Mountaineers got 19 points in just 13 minutes of action from senior Meg Bulger. A total of six WVU players reach double figures and all but two of the 13 that got into the game scored.
Bulger is one of four West Virginia starters averaging double figures at 13.5 points per game. Senior center Olayinka Sanni leads the team with averages of 16.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. LaQuita Owens is averaging 13 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while Chakhia Cole shows averages of 10.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
WVU has shot better than 50 percent in four of its last six games and five of its last eight, though WVU dipped to 48.6 percent in the Presbyterian win on Saturday. WVU has also handed out 57 assists in its last two wins against Presbyterian and Duquesne.
Oakland comes into the game having won three straight, including an impressive 85-75 home victory over No. 21-ranked Florida State on Dec. 2. Hanna Reising scored a game-high 23 while Jessica Pike added 20 for Oakland. Pike is averaging 18 points per game and has made a team-best 14 3-point shots. Melissa Jeltena is averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while Reising shows averages of 11.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
