Women's Soccer: Six Named All-BIG EAST

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Georgetown and Connecticut had a pair of major award winners as the BIG EAST Conference presented its women’s soccer postseason honors and named its all-conference selections Thursday evening at the Lakeview Resort. West Virginia senior Ashley Banks and Notre Dame junior Brittany Bock were named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Players of the Year. Georgetown’s Dave Nolan was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, while freshman midfielder Ingrid Wells was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. UConn senior Meghan Schnur was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, while junior teammate Brittany Taylor was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. Villanova senior Jillian Loyden was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.
The announcement came at the annual awards banquet held the night before the semifinal games of the BIG EAST Championship. This year’s Championship is being held Nov. 9 and 11 at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va., with all three games televised nationally on CSTV. In addition the title game also will be broadcast on numerous local regional sports networks.
Banks helped lead the Mountaineers (14-4-1, 9-1-1 BIG EAST) to a second consecutive American Division crown. She led the team with 34 points and posted a conference-high 13 goals. In 11 conference games, Banks ranked second in the league with 24 points and nine goals. She was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 22. Banks tallied a point in eight of 11 league games.
Bock becomes the fourth consecutive Notre Dame recipient of the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honor. She helped the Irish (14-4-1, 11-0-0 BIG EAST) go unbeaten in BIG EAST play for the eighth time in 13 seasons of membership. ND currently owns an 11-game win streak, the longest in the nation. Bock has totaled 25 points, including 11 goals. Bock was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8 and Oct. 15. She tallied a point in seven of 11 league games.
Schnur was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior led the Huskies (12-5-1, 8-2-1 BIG EAST) with 17 points and seven assists. In league play, she accumulated 12 points, including five goals and two assists to rank among the league leaders. Schnur also has helped the Huskies maintain a national ranking every week this year. A unanimous preseason pick back in August, Schnur was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1.
Taylor helped the Huskies post eight shutouts and hold 17 of 18 opponents to less than two goals. From Sept. 21 to Oct. 14, the Huskies allowed just one goal and recorded a 6-0-1 mark. Taylor is the first UConn pick for the award since Casey Zimny earned the honor in 2001. Taylor also totaled five points, including two goals and an assist during the season. A Preseason pick back in August, Taylor was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15.
Loyden earns Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the third straight season after leading the Wildcats to a record of 11-4-6, 4-3-4 in BIG EAST play. Loyden posted 12 shutouts during the regular season and was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three times during the year. The senior ranks among the national leaders in goals against average (0.52) and save percentage (.888).
Wells was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year after she led the team with 23 points, including 13 assists. Her overall assist total tied for the league lead. In league play she posted a conference-high 10 assists and 0.83 assists per game. In a match against Cincinnati on Oct. 26 she had a career-high four assists. Wells is the first Georgetown women’s soccer player to win a BIG EAST Postseason Award.
Nolan was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year after directing the Hoyas (14-6-0, 6-5-0 BIG EAST) to their best season in school history. Nolan led Georgetown to a bye through the first round of the BIG EAST Championship. The six BIG EAST wins also are a school record. Wells was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week two times this season. In addition two players were named all-conference selections. Coach Nolan is in his fourth season with the Hoyas. This is his first BIG EAST Coach of the Year award. He also is the first Georgetown women’s soccer coach to win the award.
Other members of the All-BIG EAST First Team include West Virginia junior Greer Barnes and Amanda Cicchini as well as Villanova sophomore Kelly Eagan. Louisville senior Monique Gjini and Notre Dame junior Kerri Hanks round out the squad.
