GAME NOTES
KINGSTON, R.I. – West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team (3-1) takes on American (2-2) in opening round action of the Rhode Island Invitational, Friday, Nov. 23, at Noon, at the Ryan Center.
Ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll this week, the Mountaineers will be meeting with the Eagles for the second time in as many years. In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, WVU edged American, 57-55, last year in the consolation game of the LMU/Ayres Thanksgiving Classic in Los Angeles, Calif.
The contest will also mark just the fifth-ever game against a team from the Patriot League. West Virginia is 1-0 against American, 2-0 against Bucknell and 0-1 against Lehigh in its history.
Pending the outcome of the contest with the Eagles, WVU will face either Brown or Rhode Island in consolation or championship game action of the URI Invitational at either Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Ryan Center. Brown and Rhode Island meet directly following the matchup between West Virginia and American.
Coach Mike Carey enters the weekend just two victories shy of 400 for his coaching career.
