MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University cross country coach Sean Cleary was named the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for the second time in his career on Friday.
Cleary led his No. 13 Mountaineers to an automatic bid for nationals for the fourth time in school history by placing second at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bethlehem, Pa., on Nov. 10. The NCAA Championship will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Cleary, who last won this award in 2004, is in his first year as the head track & field and cross country coach after being a part of the coaching staff for over a decade. Cleary oversaw the 2004 Mid-Atlantic Region champion team as the distance coach as the Mountaineers went on to finish 15th at nationals, the highest finish in school history.
This season, Cleary has had three all-BIG EAST performers and three all-Mid-Atlantic honorees as he has guided WVU back into the polls for the first time since 2004. The Mountaineers also won the program’s first-ever BIG EAST title on Oct. 27.
Georgetown’s Melissa Grelli was named the top women’s athlete in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Grelli won both the Mid-Atlantic Regional race and BIG EAST individual title as the leader of the No. 18 Hoyas.
