MORGANTOWN, W.Va., – Senior Andy Wright was named the 2007 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year this evening at the BIG EAST men’s soccer banquet. Senior Dan Stratford was named to the All-BIG EAST second team, while sophomore Gift Maworere was named to the All-BIG EAST honorable mention team.
Voting was conducted among the league’s 16 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Wright has netted five goals and six assists for 16 points, and leads the team in game-winning goals with four thus far this season. The senior from Liverpool, England, was named to the 2007 Preseason All-BIG EAST team and was named an All-BIG EAST first team member last season. He led the offensive effort for the Mountaineers in league play with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Wright is the first Mountaineer in program history to earn Midfielder of the Year honors.
Stratford, a native of London, England, was named to the All-BIG EAST second team. The midfielder is WVU’s all-time assists leader with a total of 27, 11 more than the previous record which was set back in 1968. Stratford was named to the Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 10, after netting the game-winner against then-No. 6 Maryland in sudden victory overtime in front of a crowd of 5,022 in College Park, Md. The senior has netted five goals this season in 20 games.
Maworere, a native of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was named to the All-BIG EAST honorable mention team. The midfielder is both an offensive and defensive threat, aiding in the defense which has recorded 13 shutouts, a school record, and has limited its opponents to an average of just 10 shots a game.
The Mountaineers finished the regular season in third place, just three points behind regular season champion Connecticut, in the BIG EAST Blue Division with a conference record of 7-3-1. WVU is 13-5-2 on the season and is currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) and is 7-1-2 over the last 10 games. WVU’s last match against Louisville ended in a 2-2 tie, with the Cardinals advancing on penalty kicks.
The Mountaineers will find out their NCAA fate on Monday, Nov. 19, when seedings are announced on ESPNews at 5:30 p.m.
