The Mountaineer defense was outstanding over the weekend in limiting opposing teams to one shot on goal (seven shots overall) in two BIG EAST victories. Beck improved to 8-3-1 between the posts, earning her fourth and fifth shutout on the season. The Johnston, Iowa, native made one save in 180 minutes of play.
Cocchi’s award comes on the heels of anchoring the back line in two shutouts and scoring the game-winner against Louisville on Friday. The goal was her second of the season and 14th of her career. The Ocean Township, N.J., native’s goal against the Cardinals was only the sixth allowed on the season by UofL goalkeeper Joanna Haig.
West Virginia’s 4-0-1 BIG EAST record is its best start since the 2002 season when WVU also started 4-0-1 in conference play. On the season, the Mountaineers have out-shot BIG EAST opponents 113-29.
Other BIG EAST award winners were Notre Dame’s Brittany Bock (Offensive Player of the Week) and Cincinnati’s Kendall Loggins (Rookie of the Week).
The weekly conference honors are the third and fourth of the season for WVU. Last week, forward Megan Mischler was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and Beck was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 10.
