Tennis: Pilsbury Advances to Semifinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis player Ashley Renee Pilsbury reached the B-2 singles semifinals of the Intercollegiate Southern Championships in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, Oct. 27.
Pilsbury’s performance thus far has been the lone bright spot on a day where five of the nine Mountaineers in singles play were defeated in the first round, and three were defeated in the quarterfinals.
Pilsbury defeated Beata Krizat of Tennessee-Martin, 6-3, 6-3, then earned another victory and a trip to the semifinals by beating Western Carolina’s Amanda Massey, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. She will play at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, against Davidson’s Trisha Wang.
Natalia Prinz lost in the A-2 quarterfinals, but defeated Diana Martinez of South Carolina-Upstate, 6-2, 6-4.
In C-2 singles, Monique Burton and Colleen Speaker won their first round matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Burton defeated Benedict’s Lauren Smith, 6-1, 6-0. Speaker won against Hannah Howerton of East Carolina, 6-0, 6-1.
The rest of the results for singles play are as follows:
A-1: Anna Novo (South Carolina-Upstate) def. Stacey Percival 6-2, 6-0
A-2: Elizma Schoonees (Tennessee-Martin) def. Monica Lyskawa 6-4, 4- 6, 6-1.
B-3: Martina Beckman (Armstrong Atlantic) def. Alexandra Kaluza 7-5, 7-5
B-4: Lora Dushanova (Davidson) def. Gabriela Blaskovicova 6-0, 6-2
C-1: Jessica Fuller (Georgia Southern) def. Stephanie LaFortune 6-3, 7-5
All four WVU doubles advanced to the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
The results are as follows:
A-1: Percival/Lyskawa def. Johnson/Larson (VIT) 8-6
A-2: Prinz/LaFortune def. Ahlberg/Webb (Coastal Carolina) 8-2
A-3: Speaker/Kaluza def. Camberos/Petkova (Coastal Carolina) 8-3
B-2: Pilsbury/Burton def. Burgon/Becker (Charleston) 9-8 (5)
