MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Stacey Percival and Monica Lyskawa of the West Virginia University women’s tennis team put forth good performances on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the ITA Women’s Eastern Regional Tournament in Yorktown, Va.
No. 118 seed Percival defeated No. 117 Vanja Lakic of Niagara, 6-4, 6-0, in her first singles match. Percival overcame a rough start to notch a quality win in a highly competitive tournament.
“Stacey got off to a sluggish start and it seemed both players were a little tentative, “says Head Coach Marc Walters. “But she rebounded and performed very well to get the win.”
Percival advances to the second round, which features the final 64 players left from a 128-player field. She will take on Catherine Kellner of Fordham on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 12:30 p.m.
Lyskawa revitalized her game after teaming with Percival to defeat Brown/Hanusz of Liberty, 8-2. However, the Mountaineers were defeated by Schmitt/Soor of Marshall, 7-5, in the second round of a highly competitive match.
With only Percival remaining as WVU’s final competitor, Walters has been pleased with the effort from both his players. “The girls kept their focus really well throughout the day,” says Walters. “I have been very pleased with their effort throughout the tournament.”
