MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With just nine seconds to go in the first overtime period, West Virginia senior captain Andy Wright found the back of the net to lift the Mountaineer men’s soccer team (8-4-0, 4-3-0) to a 1-0 victory over BIG EAST foe, Georgetown (3-9-0, 2-5-0) tonight at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Senior Andrew Halsell steadied a defensive back line and after chances that went scoreless, Halsell found Wright in the middle of the pack on an offensive drive. Wright finished off of a quick turnaround to put the game away. The goal was Wright’s fourth of the season.
“We put a lot of pressure on Georgetown”, comments Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc. “At the end of the day, I think the quality of our team showed tonight. The crowd was fantastic. With our fans, we can make Dick Dlesk a fortress, and we showed that tonight.”
Both teams created many scoring opportunities during both the first and second halves, but neither could find the back of the net. WVU out shot Georgetown, 12-9, and held an 8-2 corner kick advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Zach Johnson earned his eighth win of the season, including his seventh shutout.
The overtime win was the third of the season for the Mountaineers, who stand at 4-1 in overtime situations.
The Mountaineers continue their home stint when they play host to Navy on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. The match will be the second of three straight home games for WVU, its longest home stint of the season.
