Swimming: Mountaineers Sweep WVU Relay

MEET RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept the WVU Relay meet this afternoon, held in the Natatorium.
Both WVU teams earned excellent scores finishing the competition with 67 points on the men’s side and 55 on the women’s.
West Virginia Wesleyan came in second on the women’s side with 41 points, while Wheeling Jesuit earned third with 35 points. On the men’s side, WVWC placed second with 57 points and Wheeling Jesuit finished third with 38 points.
The Mountaineers’ morning was highlighted with strong overall showings in the 100 and 1000 yard freestyle events. Sophomore Shaunna Purtell captured wins in both events for the women with times of 53.47 and 10:36.15. Junior Michael Walker won the 1000 yard freestyle for the men with a time of 9:45.07, while junior Payton Brooks took the 100 yard freestyle in 48.09.
“I think the team preformed much better today than they did last week,” says Head Coach Vic Riggs. “Their focus was a lot better and overall they finished stronger in all of their events”
The Mountaineers will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 18, as they travel to face Penn State, in the McCoy Natatorium. Meet time is set for 4 p.m.
