MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 21st-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team hits the road for a pair of BIG EAST matches this weekend. The Mountaineers will face Providence on Friday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m., in Providence, R.I. On Sunday, Oct. 14, WVU will battle 16th-ranked Connecticut at 1 p.m., in Storrs, Conn.
“This is a big weekend for us with only six games left in the regular season,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Providence is coming off a big win over Rutgers and Connecticut is again nationally ranked. We’ve had a solid week of practice and hopefully it will carry over into the weekend.”
The Mountaineers and Friars will meet for the eighth time with WVU holding a 7-1 lead in the all-time series that began in 1996. Providence enters Friday’s match with a 2-9-1 record, 1-4-0 mark in conference play. The Friars are coached by third-year coach Jim McGirr and return nine starters from last season.
Sunday’s contest will mark the 13th meeting between the Huskies and Mountaineers dating back to 1996. UConn has won 10 meetings overall including the last three. Connecticut brings an 8-2-1 record and 4-0-1 BIG EAST mark into the weekend. The Huskies are led by veteran coach Len Tsantiris and will face Pitt on Friday before playing host to WVU.
West Virginia’s 4-0-1 BIG EAST record is its best start since the 2002 season when the team started with an identical 4-0-1 league mark. WVU and UConn are tied at the top of the BIG EAST American Division standings.
