Women's Basketball: WVU Coasts Past Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Olayinka Sanni led all scorers with 26 points to help West Virginia coast past the Georgetown Hoyas 69-47 Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C.
Sanni’s 26-point effort marked the fourth time the Chicago Heights, Ill., native has eclipsed 20 points this season. Sanni has reached double figures in 10 straight games. Chakhia Cole pitched in 18 points to go along with a career-high nine assists. LaQuita Owens was also in double figures, making four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points. Owens now leads the Big East in 3-pointers made.
WVU jumped out to an 18-8 lead after Sanni converted a three-point play midway through the first half. Georgetown quickly responded with a 3 from Meredith Cox followed by a four-point play from Kristin Heidloff. That sparked an 11-1 Hoya run that tied the score at 19.
West Virginia (14-7, 5-3) finished the half on a 20-2 run to take a commanding 39-21 lead at intermission.
The Mountaineers shot 52 percent from the field in the first half including 3 of 8 from 3-point range. West Virginia also dominated down low in the first half, gaining a 20-2 advantages in points in the paint. The Mountaineers out rebounded Georgetown 20-12 in the first period.
The second half was more of the same as the Hoyas could get no closer than 11 the rest of the way. For the game, the Mountaineers shot a sizzling 52 percent while holding Georgetown to an ice-cold 29 percent. West Virginia also connected on 13 of 15 free throw attempts.
Georgetown (11-10, 1-7) was led by Heidloff with 18 points. Kieraah Marlow pitched in 13.
West Virginia has now won its last six games, including five in a row in the Big East. The Mountaineers have now won three straight games against Georgetown. The victory gave West Virginia their first ever win in McDonough Arena.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday night when they return home to host the Syracuse Orange. Tip off from the WVU Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
