MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s men’s swimming and diving team moved up one spot to 19th on the newly released College Swim Coaches Association of America Poll.
The Mountaineers (9-0, 4-0) entered the poll at the beginning of November in the same spot. The team then slipped to 20th, where it stayed until today’s poll. It is believed to be the first season that the squad has ever been nationally ranked.
The men currently hold 28 of the top 100 times in the nation. Junior Nick Delic leads the swimmers with three top 10 times – the 100 breast (second, 53.17), the 100 free (fifth, 43.40) and the 100 fly (seventh, 47.26).
The team has enjoyed unparallel success this year. The season kicked-off with a home win against Penn State, 137-104, and a first place finish in November’s Terrapin Cup Invitational.
As of late, the Mountaineers have been torching their BIG EAST opponents, winning dual meets by an average of 92.5 points. The team’s biggest win was also its closest, narrowly defeating Pitt at Trees Pool on Jan. 6, 159-141. The victory was the first time in 17 years that WVU beat Pitt in the pool.
The team is back in action tonight at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind., at Rolfs Aquatic Center. The quad meet, against host Notre Dame, Penn State and Oakland, will continue tomorrow, Jan. 27, and could solidify a perfect season for the men.
