MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will welcome Akron for a non-conference match at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the WVU rifle range.
The Mountaineers (4-3, 2-3) enter this weekend’s competition after a successful weekend at the Palmyra Invitational. The team recorded smallbore, air rifle and aggregate season highs. The air rifle sum of 2306 was just one point shy of the school record set by last year’s squad. Lafe Kunkel shot 579 points in air rifle, his highest mark of the season.
“It’s nice to be home again,” said coach Jon Hammond. “Hopefully we can really build on last week at Palmyra and just keep improving. We only have two more home matches so we have to shoot as well as we can and hopefully that will give us a chance of qualifying for NCAAs.”
The Zips (7-1) will come to Morgantown following their first defeat of the season to the U.S. Naval Academy on Sunday, Jan. 14. The Midshipmen totaled 4600 points while Akron’s Gold team finished with 4530 points and the Blue team registered 4420 points. On Saturday, Jan. 13 the Gold team took first place against Penn State while the Blue team came in second.
