Gymnastics: WVU Ranks 11th After First Meet

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team ranks 11th in the country after their season-opening performance at home against James Madison and Michigan on Jan. 12.
West Virginia’s team score of 194.800 is the country’s 11th best average while last weekend’s opponent Michigan ranks just one spot ahead of the Mountaineers at No. 10 with an average score of 194.850. Florida ranks No. 1, with Georgia, Utah, Alabama and Nebraska all following in the top five.
WVU currently ranks second in the country as a team in the floor exercise with a score of 49.300, while also ranking 10th in the vault (49.025) and 12th in the balance beam (48.550).
Senior Tynisha Dennis is tied for first in the nation in the floor exercise with a 9.925. Senior Janáe Cox’s balance beam score of 9.9 has her tied for second nationally while her 39.250 all-around score ranks her 11th in the country this week. Junior Jaime Gold also ranks in the top 10 in vault (9.875) and is tied for 11th in floor exercise (9.875).
Rankings are determined by average score early in the season before a regional qualifying score is calculated and used to determine rankings towards the end of the year.
