MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 24 West Virginia University gymnastics team will open the 2007 season by hosting No. 6 Michigan and James Madison on Friday night, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU has never lost in 18 meetings with James Madison and topped the Dukes 194.725 to 185.700 in a meet at Pitt last year on March 7.
The Mountaineers do trail in the all-time series with Michigan, 4-12-0. Last year, the Wolverines and Mountaineers saw each other early in the season at Penn State as then second-ranked Michigan scored a 194.825 to WVU’s 190.675 in State College, Pa.
The Mountaineers return 14 letterwinners from last year’s team, including EAGL rookie of the year Mehgan Morris and two-time National qualifier Janáe Cox, while welcoming five new freshmen to this year’s squad. The newcomers are Shelly Purkat, Kiersten Spoerke, Chelsi Tabor, Elizabeth White and Ashley Wilson.
West Virginia is coming off of a 22-8 season with third place EAGL finish and a fifth place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga., in 2006. It was the Mountaineers 12th 20-win season in school history and 28th trip to Regionals in the last 29 years.
