MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia men’s soccer player Nick Noble has been named to the Soccer America national team of the week on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006.
The senior goalkeeper led the Mountaineers to a pair of wins at home last week. Noble recorded his 29th career shutout on Tuesday, Aug. 29, to break the career record at WVU formerly held by Jon Capon (1978-81).
On Saturday, Sept. 2, the Damascus, Md., native played an instrumental role in the Mountaineers’ 2-1 victory over No. 17 Cal State Northridge. Noble tallied a season high five saves in the match.
Noble and the No. 10 Mountaineers (3-0-1) take their highest ranking in school history onto the pitch of Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. when they host Cincinnati to open BIG EAST play.
Englishmen Andy Wright and Dan Stratford lead the WVU offense through four games this season. Wright has netted his three points on a goal and an assist, while Stratford has assisted on three Mountaineer goals.
The Bearcats enter Friday’s match with a 2-1-1 record. UC started the season 2-0 on the season with home wins over Xavier (2-1) and Bradley (2-0), but went 0-1-1 last weekend at the SMU/Radisson tournament with a 6-0 loss to host SMU and a 0-0 tie with Florida International.
WVU owns the all-time series lead between the two teams at 2-0. The two teams last met in 1987 with the Mountaineers winning 2-1 in Cincinnati.
