MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team moved into the top 10 of two polls this week after dominating both of their opponents this past weekend to move to 4-0.
WVU moved up three spots from 12th to ninth in the Soccer America poll while moving up two spots from 12th to 10th in the weekly Soccer Buzz rankings. The Mountaineers also made ground in the NSCAA/adidas poll by moving up to No. 17 from the 18th spot.
Senior Lana Bannerman and freshman Carolyn Blank were both named to the BIG EAST honor roll after their performances last weekend. Bannerman recorded her school record 26th and 27th career shutouts as WVU cruised past Western Michigan and Binghamton, while Blank helped anchor a defense that allowed just four shots in two games. Blank also scored her first career goal in the 65th minute of Sunday’s 4-0 win over Binghamton.
The Mountaineers hit the road to face No. 7 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m., in State College, Pa. The teams met last year in the second round of the NCAA tournament with the Nittany Lions taking a 5-2 decision.
