MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Greg Van Zant today announced that the annual Blue-Gold World Series will take place on Oct. 7-9, at Hawley Field. For the first time ever, WVU student radio station U-92 will provide live coverage of all three games in the series.
The series begins on Saturday, Oct. 7, at noon, with game two being at 3 p.m., on Oct. 8, and the final game scheduled to start on Oct. 9, at 5 p.m.
The series occurs near the end of the team’s 22 intra-squad games this fall with the Mountaineers having already completed 11 games thus far.
“We learn more about some of our players when we watch them play in this event,” says Van Zant. “The Blue-Gold World Series helps us decide who makes the team and who will be awarded starting positions for the spring.”
Van Zant also announced that Scout Day will be on Oct. 3, to showcase draft eligible players. Scouts from all 30 major league teams as well as from the MLB Scout Bureau are invited to watch West Virginia practice.
“We want to help our players do well in school, but we also want to help them attain their dreams of playing in the major league,” says Van Zant.
Also on the agenda is the 100 Inning Game on Sunday, Oct. 15. This marks the 11th consecutive year WVU has participated in the charity event.
Catchers Justin Parks and Mike Schmidt are emerging as likely replacements for David Carpenter, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals last June. Parks is hitting .467 while Schmidt is batting .387 this fall.
Senior standout Justin Jenkins leads the team with 14 RBI and is hitting .351 with four doubles. Freshman All-American Adam White and this summer’s Valley League MVP Tyler Kuhn join Jenkins as returning starters from last season.
“They are three solid players to build the team around,” Van Zant adds.
Van Zant also says that pitching is ahead of where it was last year at this time. Junior Matt Yurish has posted a 2.08 ERA and Brendan Bergerson has a 2.51 ERA through 11 games this fall, while right-handed pitchers Josh Whitlock and Levi Maxwell have been recorded throwing in the low 90 mph range.
