MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University men’s soccer player Jarrod Smith has been named the BIG EAST offensive player of the week on Monday, Sept. 25, 2006.
The Havelock North, New Zealand, native tallied three goals and one assist last week to increase his season point total to 19 on the season (eight goals, three assists).
The senior began his week by recording WVU’s lone goal versus No. 2 Virginia in a 2-1 overtime defeat. He followed up that performance by scoring two more goals against No. 21 Seton Hall and assisting on another in the Mountaineers’ 5-3 win over the Pirates.
Smith’s 26 career goals now rank him tied with Manny Matos (1971-74) for eighth on the WVU career goal scoring list. His eight goals on the season have already tied his career high for goals in a season with eight regular season matches still to play.
West Virginia advanced two spots in Monday’s Soccer America poll to No. 10. Other BIG EAST teams in this week’s poll include No. 11 South Florida and No. 15 Notre Dame.
The Mountaineers climbed one spot in this week’s CollegeSoccerNews.com Top 30 poll to number 14 this week. Other conference teams ranking in this week’s poll include No. 16 South Florida, No. 17 Connecticut and No. 29 Notre Dame. Providence and Seton Hall received votes.
Monday marks the third consecutive week that the WVU has ranked as the highest BIG EAST team in at least one or more Top 25 polls.
West Virginia hits the road again on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when it faces Penn State at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. WVU head coach Marlon LeBlanc served as a Nittany Lion assistant from 2001-05, before coming to Morgantown in August.
