Volleyball: WVU Falls in BIG EAST Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped three games to Connecticut in its BIG EAST opener today at the WVU Coliseum.
Connecticut (11-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) won the match 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-22).
West Virginia (1-14, 0-1 BIG EAST) put the first point on the board with a kill by outside hitter Abby Tevis. Connecticut quickly recovered and scored five consecutive points to give the team a convincing 5-1 lead over the Mountaineers. WVU could not recover and fell 20-30 to the Huskies.
The Mountaineers came out strong in game two. The score was tied four separate times before the Huskies pulled head 12-6. Not about to give up, West Virginia battled back to within one point, bringing the score to 14-15. WVU put out a valiant effort, but was not able to overcome Connecticut. The Huskies took game two by a score of 30-25.
Connecticut took an early lead in game three and held it. The Mountaineers kept close, but the Huskies proved to be too much in the end as WVU fell 22-30. Despite the game three loss, libero Aurora Ebert-Santos and setter Kailee Goold both totaled a game-high five digs for West Virginia.
WVU totaled seven team blocks to Connecticut’s six. Middle blocker Lisa Hough led the Mountaineers with four blocks.
Setter Gina Cusanelli totaled 8.5 points for West Virginia while Tevis recorded seven kills. Goold registered 11 digs, four of which came in game two.
West Virginia will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 24, with a 2 p.m. match against St. John’s at the WVU Coliseum.
