College Park, Md. – The West Virginia University tennis team secured several key victories on the first day of action at the Maryland Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22, in College Park, Md.
At “Flight B” singles, senior Kelly Walsh defeated number one seed Staten Spencer of LSU, 7-5, 6-4. Senior Ashley Constantine also achieved success, defeating Sloane Mathis of LSU, 6-4, 7-6 (3), in “Flight D” singles.
“We had strong performances by Kelly and Ashley,” said head coach Marc Walters. “Both girls handled tight matches against SEC players, the nation’s strongest tennis conference.”
The Mountaineers were all involved in close matches throughout the day.
“I really liked what I saw from our team, competitively speaking,” said Walters. “We will have our hands full tomorrow in all of the flights as we continue to learn more about our team.”
Quarterfinal action resumes today, Sept. 23. The invitational will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 24.
