Volleyball: WVU Falls to Marshall in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped three straight games to Marshall tonight at the Charleston Civic Center.
Marshall (9-6) won the match 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-19).
WVU’s Abby Tevis registered the first points of the night. Tevis recorded a service ace on the opening play to put West Virginia (1-13) up 1-0. The game was tied four separate times before Marshall pulled ahead. The Thundering Herd recorded a 30-17 win in game one.
Determined not to let the Mountaineers get the upper hand, Marshall established a convincing lead early in game two. Trying to keep WVU in the game, setter Gina Cusanelli and Tevis logged key kills early. In the end, West Virginia could not keep up with Marshall. The Thundering Herd took game two by a score of 30-18.
The Mountaineers kept pace with Marshall at the start of game three. However, after its opponent scored four consecutive points, West Virginia could not regain its momentum. The Herd won game three 30-19.
Tevis totaled a match-high nine kills and 12 points for the Mountaineers. The outside hitter averages a team-high 3.35 kills per game this season. Libero Aurora Ebert-Santos tallied 10 digs for West Virginia. Ebert-Santos has recorded 187 digs in 44 games.
WVU will return to Morgantown this weekend to open BIG EAST play. The Mountaineers will take on Connecticut at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23. The team will close out the week’s competition in a 2 p.m. bout with St. John’s on Sept. 24.
