MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team climbed two spots in this week’s Soccer America Top 25 poll to 12th and one spot in the CollegeSoccerNews.com Top 30 poll to 15th on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006.
The Mountaineers (6-0-2, 3-0-1) hit the road for the first time in 2006 this past weekend as they tied No. 21 South Florida, 2-2, on Friday and defeated DePaul, 3-0, on Sunday. West Virginia has now scored 13 goals to its opponents four with five shutouts by its defense.
WVU faces its toughest test of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 19, when it wraps up its road trip at Klöckner Stadium against Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers rank No. 1 in both polls that came out today. In last week’s NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, UVA ranked No. 3, with the Mountaineers coming in at No. 8.
The NSCAA and SoccerTimes.com polls are released every Tuesday.
Virginia leads the all-time series between the two schools at 4-1. WVU’s lone win came in the first round of the 1981 NCAA tournament by way of a 2-1 decision.
In tomorrow evening’s match, West Virginia will be looking to tie the 1968 team for the longest undefeated streak in program history at nine matches. A win or tie Tuesday will also make WVU the first team in program history since 1989 to start out undefeated in its first three road matches.
