MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 7 West Virginia women’s soccer team rolled over rival Pitt 4-1, on Friday, Sept. 15, in Morgantown.
After Meta Haley got Pitt on the board in the game’s 14th minute, BIG EAST offensive player of the week Deana Everrett took a pass from Kim Bonilla at the top box and shot it into the right corner of the net to set the game at 1-1 just five minutes later. Everrett’s goal was her eighth of the season, a team-high.
West Virginia picked up one more goal in the half in the 27th minute when junior all-BIG EAST pick Ashley Banks gave the Mountaineers the lead on an assist from Everrett.
Leading 2-1, West Virginia looked to Banks for more scoring in the second half. The Annandale, Va., native set up WVU’s next goal when teammate Amanda Cicchini, also an all-BIG EAST selection, knocked in Banks’ cross with her head in the 52nd minute.
Banks night wasn’t finished until she added a goal in the 88th minute to leave the Mountaineers with a 4-1 victory. Banks now has six goals on the year.
“Getting a win tonight is a great way to start off in our conference,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “We know that Virginia will be a big test as always for us on Sunday.”
West Virginia (7-0, 1-0) has won seven straight games for the first time since 2003, when the Mountaineers ripped off nine straight wins after a season-opening loss at Virginia.
Pitt drops to 4-2-1 with an 0-1 record in BIG EAST play. Pitt goalkeeper Alison Finch had nine saves on 27 West Virginia shots.
WVU returns to action to play its final non-conference game of the regular season at home against No. 21 Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
