MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia women’s soccer team jumped up 10 spots to No. 7 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
The ranking ties the highest ever in the NSCAA poll since WVU was ranked seventh back on Oct. 28, 2002, with a 15-1-1 record. The Mountaineers are also ranked in the top 10 of Soccer Buzz (6) and Soccer America (8). WVU has been ranked in Soccer Buzz’s poll for 54 consecutive weeks now, which is the sixth-longest streak among current ranked teams.
Notre Dame held onto the top spot with two more wins to improve to 6-0, while UConn (2-3-1) is the other BIG EAST school ranked at No. 13. Conference members Louisville and Villanova both received votes.
The Mountaineers have now been ranked in at least one major poll (Soccer America or NSCAA) 44 of the last 46 weeks.
The NSCAA also ranks WVU number one in the Mid-Atlantic region ahead of Penn State (9), William & Mary (18) and Virginia (21).
West Virginia (6-0) is off to its best start in school history. WVU picked up two more wins last weekend with a 2-1 upset of previously-ranked No. 7 Penn State and a school record 8-0 victory over St. Bonaventure.
Sophomore forward Deana Everrett and junior defender Natalie Cocchi have been named BIG EAST offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for their performances over the weekend.
West Virginia opens BIG EAST play against rival Pitt on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
