MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s soccer team routed the Western Michigan Broncos, 4-0, in the team’s home opener Friday night, Sept. 1, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
West Virginia dominated all 90 minutes and scored four goals on 37 shots, 18 of which were shots on goal. Western Michigan had just four shots in the direction of goalkeeper Lana Bannerman, who recorded one save. The shutout was the first of the season for Bannerman and the 26th of her career.
“We were fortunate to limit Western Michigan’s opportunities on our side of the field,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “It was a great team effort tonight; our defense stepped up and helped deliver the shutout.”
The Mountaineers struck first in the game’s 24th minute as preseason all-BIG EAST selection junior Ashley Banks was fouled in the right side of the penalty box. Banks was awarded a penalty kick and converted to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead it would never relinquish.
WVU would not net another goal until the 70th minute was sophomore Deana Everrett streaked down the right side past three defenders and hit a 15-yard shot into the left side of the net.
“Western Michigan’s goalie (Jessica Laning) played outstanding tonight for her team,” Izzo-Brown added. “But we were finally able to convert some of our opportunities in the second half.”
The Mountaineers tacked on two more goals in the 77th and 79th minute as Kelsey Fowler and Kiley Harris each knocked in goals off of corner kicks to leave the score at 4-0. Laning finished the game with 14 saves.
WVU is now 10-1 all-time in home openers and returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 3, to take on Binghamton at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m.
