Volleyball: WVU Drops Three to Duke

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped three games to Duke in the opening match of the Penn State Invitational this evening.
Duke (4-0) won the match 3-0 (30-19, 30-17, 30-17).
WVU (1-3) started off game one trailing the undefeated Blue Devils 0-3. The Mountaineers battled back to a 6-6 tie early on, but were unable to keep up with the opposition. West Virginia registered only seven kills to Duke’s 22.
The Mountaineers struggled early in game two, allowing the Blue Devils to advance to an 8-0 lead. West Virginia was not able to get back in the competition as Duke used momentum to its advantage. Duke won the game 30-17.
The Blue Devils carried their energy into game three, quickly establishing a 6-1 lead over the Mountaineers. Despite a team total of 13 kills, WVU’s highest kill total of the match, Duke came out on top.
Outside hitter Marissa Meyers of the Mountaineers and teammate Lisa Hough, a middle blocker, led West Virginia with six kills each. Sophomore middle blocker Delie Marsonek recorded seven digs for WVU.
West Virginia will open day two action tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against No. 2 Penn State.
