MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University football coach Rich Rodriguez has been selected to coach the 2007 Hula Bowl, the game’s executive director Joe Dan Rogers announced today.
“Coaching in the Hula Bowl should be a wonderful experience,” says Rodriguez. “I’ve never been to Hawaii, so that will be terrific, but it will also be a great experience to work with so many great athletes and coaches from around the nation.”
The innovative Rodriguez, who begins his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater, led WVU to an 11-1 record and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia last season. Twice the BIG EAST coach of the year, his Mountaineers are ranked No. 5 in the 2006 preseason poll.
“We are excited Rich has agreed to coach in our game. His enthusiasm on the field and knowledge of the game were paramount in making this decision,” says Rogers. “Coach Rodriguez will have a positive impact on our all-star football players and the community of Honolulu.”
The all-star game, now in its 61st year, will be played Saturday, January 14. ESPN will televise the game, which kicks off at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time.
