MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Valley Baseball League has named two Mountaineers as players of the week for the week of July 11. WVU junior Tyler Kuhn and senior Justin Jenkins were named Northern and Southern Division POW, respectively.
Kuhn played well for the Luray Wranglers and hit .429 including one triple, two home runs and four RBI last week. He tied Jenkins for the league lead with 14 total bases for the week. He leads his team in batting at .338 with six doubles, five triples, three home runs, 14 RBI and 24 runs scored.
Jenkins had a phenomenal week for the Waynesboro Generals despite just joining the team two weeks ago. He batted .409 with nine hits, a triple, home run, two RBI and five runs scored. He is batting .362 with two home runs and seven RBI in playing just 11 games for the Generals.
Kuhn was joined by WVU pitcher Matt Yurish on the VBL’s north all-star team while Mountaineer redshirt freshman All-American Adam White and pitcher Levi Maxwell both were named to the south all-star team.
The VBL has 10 teams and has had top major leaguers like David Eckstein, Aubrey Huff, Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre and Reggie Sanders play in the league’s 14-year history.
Kuhn and Jenkins join Maxwell and redshirt freshman pitcher Billy Gross as Mountaineer players who have earned player of the week.
Waynesboro's Maxwell picked up pitcher of the week honors in the Valley League on June 20 after giving up just one earned run in 10.1 innings of work. Maxwell struck out 12 batters in that span and was the only VBL pitcher that week to go 2-0.
Gross was named the pitcher of the week in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League for the week of June 9 through the June 18 after posting a 2.70 ERA in earning two victories on the mound for the Rockville Express. Gross was also named to the all-star team.
Redshirt freshman first baseman Jordon Yost has 22 home runs for the Beckley Bash American Legion team. Yost holds the all-time home run record in West Virginia American Legion history.
