MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University outdoor track team finished in ninth place with 44 points at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 5-7, held at the Sharman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.
“Knowing that we redshirted some kids this year, we finished right about where I thought we would in the BIG EAST,” head coach Jeff Huntoon said. “We also finished ninth in the indoor season but I feel we competed better in this meet."
Junior Jessica Czaikowski had a stellar Sunday afternoon to give West Virginia its only first place finish. The Tottenham, Ontario, native won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.42 and also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 11.66.
“It was great for Jessica because she has gotten second so many times in her career,” Huntoon added.
Czaikowski almost won both events as the 100-meter dash came down to a photo finish, but Connecticut freshman Jessica Foreman took first at 11.63. Czaikowski’s finishing position in both events earned the Mountaineers a total of 15 points.
The 4x100-meter relay of came into the meet as the top seed and placed second behind Pittsburgh at 45.93, earning eight points.
Freshman Raeleen Hunter took sixth in the 800-meter run to give WVU three points while Shani Boone and Junique Morris finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the 200 to add three more points to West Virginia’s total.
WVU also received points on Saturday from senior Susan Davis (8) for finishing second in the steeplechase at 10:25.93. Davis’ time qualified her for NCAA Regionals despite being just the first time she had competed in the steeplechase this year.
The Mountaineers also picked up points from senior Jen Hall (4), who placed fifth in the pole vault and Lindsey Clark (3), who took sixth in the javelin. Overall, West Virginia had a total of five top-five finishes on the weekend.
The Mountaineers return to the track on May 12-14 at the ECAC Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
