BETHESDA, Md. – The West Virginia University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Georgetown on Saturday, May 6, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
Georgetown (23-26, 9-11 BIG EAST) stole game one of the twin bill 5-4 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. West Virginia (29-17, 9-11 BIG EAST) did not trail until that point, controlling a tightly contested game for the first seven and a half innings.
The game was knotted at three runs apiece until Adam White hit a ball to shortstop Matthew Bouchard that resulted in a fielding error and allowed Casey Bowling to score from third. The lead marked the third of the game for the Mountaineers.
But the lead would be short lived though, as Timmy Jones scored for Georgetown on a single by Bouchard with one out to tie the game. Brandon Davis put the Hoyas on top as he hit a hard ball to third baseman Justin Jenkins that could not be handled cleanly and give Drew Dargen time to score from third base.
WVU pitcher Dan Leatherman pitched all eight innings for the Mountaineers and fell to 7-2 on the season. The Walkersville, Md., native allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking two.
Georgetown starter Warren Sizemore got the win to improve to 4-4 on the season. Sizemore pitched eight innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits, while walking three.
Daniel Kennedy earned the save as he pitched the ninth and allowed no runs and no hits, while striking out one.
GU took the second game by a score of 7-6 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Much like the first game neither team could pull away in the nightcap as the lead bounced back and forth between the Mountaineers and Hoyas.
West Virginia struck first in the top of the second when designated hitter Michael Burger drove a single to right field that allowed Kyle Matuszek to score from second.
Georgetown countered with a pair of runs in its half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Stan Posluszny and Matuszek each knocked in a run in the top of the third to grab the lead back. However, the Hoyas added two more runs on WVU starting pitcher Marty Fagler before his outing was ended.
After both teams went silent in the fourth and fifth West Virginia put together a three-run sixth inning on two costly Hoya mishaps. White laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored David Carpenter and allowed him to reach first on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Burger scored the next run from third base on a passed ball by catcher Brandon Davis. Tyler Kuhn knocked in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center that scored White from third.
The lead would once again not last long as Davis sent a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game at six.
Georgetown then took the lead for good when Mark McLaughlin grounded out to second that sent Matt Harrigan home from third base.
Reliever Levi Maxwell took the loss for WVU and dropped to 1-1 on the season, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on four hits.
Grady McConnell improved to 2-4 on the season after coming in to relieve starter Stephen Burns. McConnell pitched two innings and allowed no runs on one hit.
Kennedy set the Georgetown season save record with his second save of the doubleheader. Kennedy now has nine on the season.
The Mountaineers and Hoyas return to action for the final game of the series tomorrow at noon at Shirley Povich Field.
