PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team got their fifth straight victory as they defeated BIG EAST foe Rutgers, 4-3, on Sunday, April 9, at the Inman Racquet Club in Piscataway, N.J.
“To get three conference wins in one weekend is great way to get momentum heading into tournament,” head coach Dan Silverstein said. “Everyone stepped up at some point and I’m proud of the way they played.”
West Virginia (8-10, 6-3) got the match rolling by earning the doubles point. Sophomores Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival teamed up at No.1 with a victory over Markowitz/Shmakova, 8-4. At No.2, senior Raynie Theis and junior Kelly Walsh got an 8-3 win over Edelschein/Gordon.
In singles play, Prinz sealed the match for the Mountaineers as she got a big win at No.1 over Katrina Elder-Bush, 6-1, 6-2.
“Natalia stepped up big for us today,” Silverstein said. “We needed that point for the win and that’s exactly what she was able to do.”
At No.3, Percival won over Shmakova, 6-4, 6-2, while Theis was too much for Jill Markowitz, winning 6-4, 6-2, at No.5.
Sophomore Monica Lyskawa fell at No.2 to Dana Gordon, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Kelly Walsh lost a tight match to Alina Balasa, 4-6, 6-2 (7-6) at No.4, while sophomore Colleen Speaker was defeated at No.6 by Lauren Edelschein, 6-3, 6-3.
