MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will travel to play ACC opponent Maryland Tuesday, April 18, in College Park, Md., at 7 p.m.
West Virginia (25-11, 5-7 BIG EAST) is looking to gain momentum after dropping all three league games to UConn this past weekend at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers are now tied for seventh in the BIG EAST standings with Georgetown and Cincinnati.
WVU is led by junior third baseman Justin Jenkins, who is currently riding a 20-game hitting streak. Jenkins is batting .408, with nine home runs, 33 RBI, and a BIG EAST leading 104 total bases. Jenkins also leads the BIG EAST in hits (62), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.689) and runs scored (44). He has 19 multiple-hit games to his credit this year.
The Terrapins (16-23, 6-15 ACC) are also coming off a conference sweep courtesy of No. 12 N.C. State. Maryland’s Dan Melvin leads the team in batting average at .341. Melvin also has three home runs and 15 RBI.
The Terps are expected to start Mike Sufczynski on the mound Tuesday. Sufczynski (1-1) has a 5.90 ERA in 29 innings pitched this year. WVU is expected to throw sophomore Matt Yurish (4-1), who has a 2.91 ERA in eight starts with 49 strikeouts.
WVU and Maryland’s only common opponent this season was N.C. State. The Wolfpack swept Maryland last weekend and beat the Mountaineers 12-4 at East Carolina’s Keith LeClair Tournament in Greenville, N.C., on Feb. 24.
