MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women's tennis coach Dan Silverstein today announced the signing of Gabriela Blaskovicova from Bradenton, Fla., for the 2006 season.
In 2005, Blaskovicova's ITF junior world ranking peaked at 514 after advancing to the round of 16 at a Grade 3 ITF tournament in Portugal. She then made the semifinals of a Grade 4 tournament in Guadalupe in doubles competition.
"Gabriela is an outstanding student-athlete who comes from one of the best tennis programs in the country," Silverstein said. "I believe she'll be an impact player for us."
Blaskovicova, born in Bratislava, Slovakia, moved to the United States at age seven. When she turned 11, she started attending IMG Academies, a very prestigious tennis academy where she was coached by Percy Melzi, Ceasar Castaneda and Tomas Dvoracek.
Blaskovicova attends Bradenton Academy where she carries a 3.7 GPA in all honors courses. She is the daughter of Vladamir Blaskovic and Gabriela Blaskovicova. Her older brother, Marek, played tennis at Illionois State from 2001-2003.
"Gabriela's international experience combined with her powerful groundstrokes and athletic ability will help her coming into the BIG EAST conference," Silverstein said. "She's an outstanding tennis player that comes from a great family and will be a great addition to the Mountaineer tennis family."
