ATHENS, Ohio – Willie Walker’s two-out, two-run single off reliever Kevin Korzun in the bottom of the ninth lifted Ohio to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over West Virginia Tuesday night at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio.
West Virginia (25-8) re-took the lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Tyler Kuhn, plating pinch hitter Austin Markel, who walked to start the inning, and Adam White, who singled.
In the top of the ninth, Mountaineer reliever Trent Ridgley walked the leadoff batter Chris Klimko, who moved to second on Matt Stiffler’s sacrifice bunt. Another Ridgley walk to Bryant Witt forced West Virginia coach Greg Van Zant to go to his bullpen with the right-hander Korzun.
A wild pitch by Korzun moved Dusty Hammond to third and Witt to second. After intentionally walking No. 3 hitter Anthony Gressick, Korzun got Brandon Besl to force Hammond out at home on a grounder to third baseman Justin Jenkins.
But Walker followed with the single to center to boost the Bobcats to 11-14.
Ohio reliever Chris Rigo pitched the ninth inning to earn his first victory of the year. Korzun drops to 0-1.
West Virginia starter Matt Yurish lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, while striking out eight and walking four. Three West Virginia pitchers combined to walk nine Ohio University batters.
Klimko went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run in the fifth to lead Ohio.
West Virginia got three hits and three RBI from leadoff batter Tyler Kuhn; Kyle Matuszek, David Carpenter and Adam White had two hits each. The Mountaineers had 12 hits.
Last year the Bobcats won an 11-10 nail-biter in Morgantown.
West Virginia, coming off a three-game sweep at Rutgers, has now lost four straight heading into an important Big East series at Hawley Field against Connecticut. The Mountaineers are 17-0 at home this year and just 3-6 in road games.
Thursday’s game against the Huskies will begin at 7:05 pm and will be carried live on WAJR and on the Internet through CSTV All Access.
