SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – It took two days for West Virginia to deposit Seton Hall 7-5 in the first game of a three-game Big East Conference series at Owen T. Carroll Field..
Friday's game was suspended due to darkness with the Mountaineers leading 7-4 and batting in the top of the ninth inning. The Pirates were able to get a run in the bottom of the ninth off of reliever Dan Leatherman when John Walsh drilled a ground rule double to left center. Walsh finished the game with three hits for the Pirates, now 7-16, 1-6.
West Virginia (22-3, 4-0) got a run in the first when Stan Posluszny doubled in Doug Nelms, who reached on an infield hit. Posluszny also took a Luis Fernendez 1-2 pitch over the right center field fence for his fourth home run of the year in the seventh.
The Mountaineers plated three runs in the seventh, getting a run on a pinch-hit double by designated hitter Michael Burger, who also scored on Fernendez’s throwing error trying to get out Burger at the plate on Jason Pape’s bunt attempt.
West Virginia got two runs in the second on a two-run single by Tyler Kuhn, and got another run in the fifth when Justin Jenkins scored on a passed ball.
Seton Hall knocked out West Virginia starter Joe Stupka in the second, plating three runs on seven hits. Eric Saffell was able to retire Robbie Hine on a ground out to third to leave the bases loaded.
The Pirates got a run in the eighth off Saffell when Brandon Cohen doubled to left center, scoring Dan Lopez who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Seton Hall produced 13 hits but stranded 12 runs, including the bases loaded in the second and fifth innings.
Pirate starter Dan MacDonald is on the hook, giving up four runs and five hits in five innings of work. He struck out seven and walked six.
Saffell pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one earned run and striking out three to pick up his fourth win of the year. Leatherman got his third save of the year.
Posluszny and Jenkins had a pair of hits each for West Virginia. Cohen, Matt Smedberg, and Greg Miller have two hits each for Seton Hall.
