ATLANTA - West Virginia University swimmer Nick Delic swam to a 13th place finish in the 100 breast in the NCAA Championship finals on Friday, March 24, at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Delic, a native of Split, Croatia, finished the race in 54.09. He moved up one spot after placing 14th in the preliminaries earlier in the afternoon.
"Nick swam much better tonight and had a very smart race," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "I'm very excited for him. It's been a good trip for him to get some experience for the team."
With Delic's finish in the finals, the Mountaineers now have 12 total team points and are in 27th place. West Virginia has only earned team points once in school history back in 1983 when the Mountaineers finished in a three-way tie with Illinois and Michigan State with 3 points each. The only other BIG EAST school with team points at this season's championships is Louisville with one team point.
West Virginia will wrap up competition tomorrow on the final day of the championships. The Mountaineers will compete in the 100 free, 200 fly and the 400 free relay. Preliminaries will begin at noon.
"Hopefully our relay will do well and we can get some more points on the board," Lopez said.
