MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University soccer team posted a 3-0-1 record and never trailed in a match on its recent spring break trip to Tampa, Fla., March 11-14.
”We are very happy with how the trip went,” said head coach Mike Seabolt. “This was the first trip of its kind for our program so it was a learning experience for everyone. Being able to get some experience against quality opponents, especially the U-17 National team, will definitely pay off next season for us.”
The Mountaineers began their trip on March 11, with a 2-0 win over Central Florida in Bradenton, Fla. Freshman Alex Yost and sophomore Andy Wright tallied goals in the match to lead the team over the Golden Knights.
That same day WVU traveled down the road to St. Petersburg, Fla., to face Eckerd College. Despite controlling the entire match West Virginia could not get on the board and time expired in a 0-0 draw.
On March 13, the Mountaineers knocked off the U-17 US National team, 3-0, in Bradenton, Fla. Jarrod Smith got his team on the board in the 10th minute off of an assist from freshman Kolby LaCrone. Just five minutes into the second half the Havelock North, New Zealand, native struck again on an assist from defender Pat Carroll. Zak Boggs scored the game’s final goal in the 58th minute.
The next day WVU netted a 3-1 victory over Tampa, where Seabolt was an assistant coach before coming to Morgantown. Smith, Boggs and sophomore Dan Stratford scored goals for the Mountaineers in the match.
The Mountaineers return to action on April 1, when they travel to Loretto, Pa., to face Robert Morris and St. Francis at 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
