Rifle: WVU Takes Sixth at Season-Ending GARC Match

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team concluded its season on Sunday with a sixth-place finish at the Great America Rifle Conference championships in Oxford, Miss.
The Mountaineers shot their third-highest score of the year with a 4594 aggregate, but could not make headway in a six-team field that included Nebraska (4676) winning its second straight GARC title and defending national champion Army (4665) placing second.
WVU fired a 2296 team score in air rifle and a 2298 team score in smallbore.
Sophomore Lafe Kunkel shot a season high 581 in air rifle to place 18th overall and a 578 smallbore for 19th. Kunkel’s combined score of 1159 was his second highest of the season and it placed him 16th in the field of 58 shooters.
Junior Brian Launer also fired a 578 in smallbore and was WVU’s next highest finisher in air rifle behind Kunkel with a 576.
Kentucky’s Jason Dardas won aggregate with a 1177, including a first-place aggregate sum of 589, while Memphis’ Krissey Bahnsen won air rifle with a 590.
