AKRON, Ohio – The West Virginia University indoor track team had a ninth place finish with 45.75 points at the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio.
Notre Dame won the meet with 109.5 points followed by Georgetown (86), Pitt (85), Villanova (67), and Syracuse (53) rounded out the top five teams.
“Anytime you have a national qualifier and a BIG EAST champion, as a coach I am very proud,” head coach Jeff Huntoon said. “We went in with a small team and the majority of them competed very well. Now we have to get back on the recruiting trail for next year.”
The Mountaineers’ Jessica Czaikowski had the best afternoon of WVU’s sprinters. The Tottenham, Ontario, native was able to place second behind Rutgers’ Shameka Marshall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31. Czaikowski also placed sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.63) to pick up three more points for the Mountaineers.
Senior Nancy Regalbuto tied for second in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters. Regalbuto was just beat out by sophomore Jillian Drouin of Syracuse who jumped 1.75 meters to win the event.
Senior Junique Morris also ran in the finals of the 60-meter dash, placing eighth (7.80), and finished sixth in the 200 (24.69), while Halimah Bashir also finished sixth in the 400 (56.27). Junior Abbie Stechschulte was still able to place seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.85) despite winning the BIG EAST pentathlon on Saturday.
In the distance events, Susan Davis ran a personal best time of 2:49.99 in the 1,000-meter finals to take fourth, while the 4x800 team of Davis, Raeleen Hunter, Alison Spiker, and Karly Hamric ran a time of 9:06.01 for a fourth place finish, worth five points.
