EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving team's 200 men's medley relay defended its BIG EAST title and broke the school record on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
The Mountaineer men are in second place after day one with 62 points, while the women are in eighth place with 48 points.
"It was a good day of swimming for us," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "I think that if we swim to our potential over the next few days, we'll do extremely well."
The relay comprised of senior Rick Mann, sophomore Nick Delic, senior Chris Hagedorn and freshman Andrew Langenfeld swam the race in 1:29.36, edging out Notre Dame to capture the title. The time replaces the former WVU record set at last years BIG EAST Championships.
"I think the guys felt a lot of pressure coming in and defending the title, but they handled it very well and were able to win."
The women's 200 medley relay also had an outstanding night as freshmen Taylor Stallings, Meghan Fiene, junior Anne Tierney and freshman Rachel Fedyk finished sixth in a time of 1:45.06, making it the second fastest time in school history.
In the 800 free relay both the men's and women's team took eighth. Sophomores Maritza Paredes, Erin Tudor, Bonnie Sutton and Stallings finished in 7:29.74, setting a new school record. Freshman Antonio Cisneros, sophomore Eduardo Ramierez and freshmen Casey Beckwith and Payton Brooks combined for a time of 6:49.95.
In diving action, sophomore Erica Pfeiffer finished in 14th place to grab some points for the Mountaineers.
Swimming continues tomorrow in East Meadow with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the finals starting at 6 p.m.
